The Importance & Value of working with Teens and Young Adults

Working with youth offers profound professional and community rewards. Navigating complex transitions, young people deserve spaces that foster their growth and celebrate their individuality. I believe libraries are uniquely positioned to provide safe, inclusive, and empowering environments where teens thrive.
The YALSA Teen Services Competencies deepened my understanding of Teen Growth and Development. This knowledge allows me to design programs and services that are developmentally relevant, fostering environments and experiences tailored to teens’ unique needs and interests.
Certificate training strengthened my ability to build trust and support teens' identity development. I now approach each interaction intentionally, making even brief connections meaningful and lasting.
I now promote Youth Engagement and Leadership by co-creating programs with teens. This empowers their voices and strengthens a sense of belonging. Strong family and community relationships further support holistic youth growth.
The certificate has reinforced my dedication to cultural competency and responsiveness, ensuring every teen feels respected and valued. I strive for a library that values diversity and equity, especially for teens facing barriers. By focusing on outcomes and assessment, I use data to improve services. Continuous learning keeps me committed to ethical and professional growth.
This certificate has expanded my knowledge and deepened my passion. I am more equipped, inspired, and determined to help youth succeed. Their potential is limitless, and I am honored to help them realize it.
